Abstract
We aimed to investigate people¡¯s recognition of immunization for Haemophilus influenza type b(Hib) meningitis, their knowledge of the vaccination as an option, the resources for parents, and the effective measures of promoting vaccination rate. From April 20th to May 10th, 2006, we assessed children who visited either a public heath center or an university hospital for scheduled vaccination. We analyzed their general characteristics, vaccination rate for Hib, and resources for parents by using the self-written questionnaires. Furthermore, investigator rechecked the questionnaire by one-on-one interview. Among the collected self-written questionnaires, the adequately answered cases for the study were conducted by 95 parents from public heath center group and 95 from university medical center group. 77 children (81.1%) received vaccination at public heath center and 79 children (81.4%) at university medical center. 133 parents (69.3%) had the knowledge of Hib vaccination and as an optional injection, 52 parents (27.1%) knew about the vaccination but without the immunization awareness as an option, and 7 parents (3.6%) did not even know the Hib vaccination itself. Out of 156 children who underwent the vaccination, most parents of 87 (56%) obtained the resources on Hib vaccination from their baby check booklets. Despite the fact that the Hib immunization is an optional vaccine, almost all of people still seek for the Hib vaccination. The good use of baby check booklets would be a significant tool for immunization awareness.
